How Is the Pear Cluster Arranged?

The three pears in the cluster sit with their points toward the center and their rounded ends outward, like a three leaf clover. Pointing them inward hides the most fragile part of each stone inside the group, where the neighboring stones and a shared center guard it, and it leaves the broadest, brightest part of each pear facing out. Why Are the Baskets Open Underneath?

Seen from the front the three stones look like they are sitting on metal. Seen from the side, each one is held in a four wall basket cut away underneath, so light enters from below as well as from the front. A closed back on a stone this size darkens the pavilion and the diamond turns grey in low light. That is the whole reason for the extra work.

The three baskets are soldered directly to each other rather than hung from separate links, so the column stays rigid and does not fold on itself when the necklace comes off. A lariat is a necklace with a vertical drop, and most of them carry one pendant at the end of it. This one keeps stones running the whole way, so the drop reads as part of the necklace rather than something hung from it. Why Use Three Diamond Shapes on One Chain?

Around the neck, round and princess cut stations alternate. A round throws light in every direction and a princess cut shows a flat square table, so alternating them gives the upper chain a rhythm without either shape taking over. At the point where the chain divides, a princess cut marks the junction, and it is the one stone that takes the weight of the drop, so its setting is the sturdiest on the necklace.

A halo would surround the marquise with pavé and add carat weight, cost, and a second set of prongs to catch on clothing. Ceramic holds its colour and takes a polish that fired enamel cannot match at an edge, which matters on a shape with two sharp points.

The pendant is built in layers. Ceramic on the face, a 14K gold plate behind it, and the marquise held on prongs between them. That back plate is not solid: it is pierced with an open marquise the size of the stone, so light passes through the pavilion instead of dying against metal. The bail is set with four small round diamonds and hangs the pendant on its own link, so the face turns to sit flat rather than locking at an angle.

The mounts and the chain are solid 14K gold, shown here in white, yellow, and rose. The frame is honeydew ceramic, a pale mint that reads almost white in daylight and turns green under warm light. Why Is the Sapphire Set Into the Clasp?

The clasp is the ornament, and it is worn at the front rather than hidden at the nape. That decision is what lets a two row choker stay flat: instead of a pendant pulling the strands down at the center, the sapphire cluster sits between them and holds both rows apart at a fixed spacing. Each strand ends at its own small connector bar on either side of the clasp, so the two rows never cross or ride over each other.

The sapphire is held in a rub over bezel, with two concentric rows of pavé diamonds ringing it. The closure is a box clasp: a flat tongue slides into the body of the clasp and locks, and the whole back plate is solid 18K white gold stamped Au750. Because the clasp is the visible centerpiece, its back is finished to the same standard as its face.

Why Are Kite Shaped Chamfers Cut Into the Bezel Wall?

A plain bezel wraps the girdle in an unbroken band of metal, which protects the stone but also shades it. Four kite shaped notches are cut through the wall at the compass points of this bezel, so the rim reads as four curved arcs instead of one solid ring. Each opening lets light enter the diamond from the side and returns a flash of the pavilion that a closed bezel would hide, while the remaining metal still covers the girdle all the way around.

The proportions follow from that. The bezel measures 4.2 mm width by height in the configuration shown, and the chamfered points are cut narrow so the wall keeps its structural thickness between them. The chain attaches at the sides of the bezel rather than to a bail, which holds the stone flat and face forward at the center of the neckline.
