Every few weeks a client sends us a competitor’s product page and asks us to match it exactly, one karat all the way through, clasp included. On a 9k piece that is the request we have to answer carefully, because a gold bracelet clasp is not like the rest of the bracelet. It is the only part that has to move.

The honest answer has two halves. We can cast a clasp in 9k, and we do. But on the one component inside it that has to flex and return, we will still suggest 14k, and we say so before the order is confirmed rather than after.

Most writing about clasps is a list of types with pictures. This is written from the production floor, where the clasp is the part that comes back.

A gold bracelet clasp fails at the return, not at the gold

Read what people write when a clasp goes. Almost nobody describes a break. They describe something that stopped holding.

The sentence that sits underneath all of these is shorter and it is the reason any of this matters: that is how I lost my chain. A clasp does not fail into a repair. It fails into a loss, usually somewhere the wearer was not looking.

Hardness and springback are two different properties

9k gold is harder than 14k and 18k. That is true, and it is a real advantage on this kind of design, where the letter faces are flat and mirror polished and every scratch shows.

Springback is a separate property. A tongue works by being pushed out of shape each time the bracelet is opened, then coming back to exactly where it started. It has to do that thousands of times over the life of the piece. Harder alloys are not automatically better at it. The 9k alloys in our supply resist the first bend well and lose their return sooner, which is why a 9k clasp tends to ship working and stop closing securely a year or two later.

That gap between the two properties is the part almost no retailer knows, because it sits a layer below where retail operates. Nothing about it is visible in a product photo, and it does not show up in the first month of wear.

There is no 9k clasp on the shelf, and that is not the end of the sentence

We have written before that in the component supply we buy from, ready made chain and findings are produced in 14k and 18k, and 9k is not among the stock. That remains true. Clasps, jump rings, spring tongues and bails are bought in, and none of them come in 9k.

What that sentence does not cover is a clasp we cast ourselves. When a design is cast from scratch, the clasp can be part of the same pour as everything else, in whatever karat the piece is in. It stops being a purchasing question and becomes a production one.

Why this bracelet has a box clasp and not a lobster

The 9k letter link bracelet we produce is a run of flat letter charms, 8.5mm across, joined by jump rings. A stock lobster clasp is round in section and sits proud of that line. Put one on the end and the eye goes straight to it.

So the clasp on that piece is a flat box: a tongue that slides into a hollow bar, with a hinged catch that folds over the top as a second hold. It is cut to the same 8.5mm width as the letters and cast in the same 9k, which is only possible because we are casting the letters anyway.

The last row is a genuine cost. A fold-over catch is slower to open and most people need both hands. That trade is worth stating plainly, because it is the thing wearers notice first and the security is the thing they notice last.

What the finishing takes off

Casting a clasp instead of buying one is not a shortcut. On the LOVE YOU version of this bracelet the CAD file called for 14 grams. The finished piece weighed 10.74 grams at 17 centimetres. That is a loss of roughly 23 percent between the file and the box.

Our normal figure across most designs is closer to 10 percent. The difference here is surface. Flat faces have nowhere to hide a casting texture, so every letter and the clasp bar are filed down and then polished until they read as one continuous mirror, and all of that metal comes off. On a design with curves and stones, far less does.

That number is one piece, one length, one letter count. It is not a specification. Change the letters or the length and it moves.

Two things push back the other way

The case against 9k on a moving part is not the whole picture.

The first is that the hardness is genuinely useful here. A clasp bar on a bracelet takes more contact against desks and sleeves than almost any other part of the piece, and 9k holds that polished face longer than 18k does.

The second is the geometry. A weakened tongue inside a box clasp is a different situation from a weakened lobster spring, because the fold-over catch is a mechanically separate hold. It does not rely on springback at all. The failure that costs people their bracelets is a single spring quietly giving up, and this design does not have a single spring.

There is no number for how many times a clasp can be bent

This is the question people actually ask, usually phrased as how many times a clasp can be bent back before it needs replacing. There is no honest number, and anyone who gives one is guessing.

What decides it is not the count. It is how far past its shape the part travels each time. A tongue flexed slightly and released returns almost indefinitely. The same tongue forced open with pliers to make it grip again has been taken past its elastic range once, and from then on it is working from a new shape that is closer to failure. That is why the pliers fix works for a few weeks and then does not.

The practical version: a clasp that has already been bent back to fix it is on its second life, whatever the karat.

Nothing on that list is a rule about a gold bracelet clasp in general. It is how we split the decision when a piece is made to order and the components are ours to choose. A 14k tongue inside a 9k clasp is not visible once the piece is assembled. It is the one place we will quietly disagree with a request to keep everything to a single karat, and the reason is that we would rather the bracelet still close in five years than be able to say it is 9k throughout.

Before ordering

Three things are worth settling before a made to order bracelet goes into production, and none of them can be changed afterwards without remaking parts.

Wrist measurement first, because a letter link bracelet is cut to a length rather than adjusted to one. Clasp type second, since a flat box and a lobster suit different link shapes and different hands. Karat on the moving part third, which is the decision this article exists to make easier.
