From the front this reads as an oval solitaire stud; from the side it is a huggie, and the line of pave under the oval is what connects the two. Among our gold earrings, it is the huggie built around a center stone.

Why a Tulip Basket for the Oval?

The oval sits in a four prong basket whose sides curve out and up like the petals of a tulip. The petals lift the stone above the shank so light reaches it from the sides, and their curved outline is visible in profile, which gives the earring a detail that only shows when someone sees it from beside you. Four prongs rise from the tips of the petals to hold the oval.

Below the oval, the shank drops straight down the front of the lobe and curves back underneath it, set along its front face with small round diamonds that lead the eye up to the center stone. The earring closes with a hinged snap behind the lobe, so it holds close and cannot slide forward.

What Metal and Diamonds Are Used?

The basket, the shank, and the hinge are solid 14K white gold with a rhodium finish. The stones are lab grown diamonds: two oval centers, which carry most of the 2 1/5 carats, and ten small rounds on the shanks. Each oval center stone carries its own IGI report. The small rounds are covered by a test certificate on the gold and the diamonds.
