What Are East West Set Hoop Earrings?

These emerald cut diamond hoop earrings carry three emerald cut lab grown diamonds across the front of each hoop, turned east west so the long axis of every stone runs across the hoop rather than along it. 2 carats across the pair, on a hinged hoop 11.90 mm in diameter and 4.70 mm wide in solid 14K yellow gold.

A hoop this small usually carries round stones, because rounds are easier to follow a curve with. Turning emerald cuts sideways instead fills the full width of the hoop with three flat tables and no gaps between them. Within our earrings range, this is the pair that puts two carats on the lobe without hanging anything below it.

Design Details

Why Are the Stones Turned Sideways?

Set the long way, three emerald cuts on an 11.90 mm hoop would each have to bend around the curve, and every stone would tilt further out of plane than the last. Turned east west, the long axis of each stone spans the 4.70 mm width of the hoop, which is flat, and only the short axis follows the curve. Three tables then sit almost level with each other rather than fanning apart.

It also changes what the hoop covers. Set lengthwise, three stones would occupy roughly a third of the circumference. Set across, they fill the entire width of the front face, so from straight on the earring reads as a solid block of diamond with a gold shank behind it. The hoop is hinged at the base and closes with a latch post at the top, so nothing has to be threaded through the lobe by hand.

Materials & Craft

What Metal and Diamonds Are Used?

The hoop, the prongs, and the hinge are solid 14K yellow gold. The six stones are lab grown diamonds, emerald cut, 2 carats across the pair, which puts each one near a third of a carat. They are set as a matched group rather than around a graded centre stone, so the pair is covered by a test certificate on the gold and the diamonds rather than by a report on each stone.

  • ◆ All six stones are matched for length, width, and step cut depth before setting, because emerald cuts sitting side by side show a mismatch in the parallel facet lines immediately
  • ◆ Each stone is held at its four corners, so no prong crosses the table and the step cut stays readable from the front
  • ◆ The seats are cut individually into the curve of the hoop so the three tables end up level, rather than following the arc and tilting apart
  • ◆ The hinge and the latch post are fitted and tested for closing tension after the stones are set, not before

What Can Be Specified Before Production?

These hoops are built to order. The configuration shown is a starting point, not a fixed SKU. The following options can be specified before production starts.

  • ◆ Hoop diameter: 11.90 mm as shown, with smaller and larger hoops built to the same width
  • ◆ Carat weight: 2 ct across the pair as shown, with lighter stones set into a narrower hoop
  • ◆ Stone count: three per hoop as shown, with more stones carried further round the circumference
  • ◆ Stone shape: emerald cut as shown, with baguette or radiant set the same way
  • ◆ Gold karat: 14K as shown, or 18K
  • ◆ Gold color: yellow as shown, with white or rose on request
  • ◆ White gold finish: rhodium plated over solid white gold; the plating wears gradually with friction, fastest on rings, and can be re-plated
  • ◆ Engraving: initials or a date cut inside the hoop, in the font you choose, included at no charge. A 4.70 mm inner face takes only a few characters
  • ◆ Stone type: lab grown diamond as standard, with natural diamond available on request
  • ◆ Diamond grade: F color and VS clarity at minimum as our lab grown standard; D color and VVS clarity available on request
