The reason to own a jacket rather than a drop is that it is two earrings. Left alone, the front stud is a plain solitaire for a working day. With the jacket on, the same piercing carries 2 3/4 carats. Within our earrings range, this is the pair that changes register without changing what is in your ear.

Where Does the Floral Basket Show?

The basket under the lower stone is pierced and set with small diamonds on its underside. From straight on you never see it. It shows when someone is standing beside or behind you, which is the angle a plain solitaire has nothing to offer. That is the whole argument for the detail: it is worked on the face of the earring that the wearer cannot see and everyone else can.

Each earring is two separate pieces. The stud goes through the lobe from the front, and the jacket slides onto the back of that same post and swings the larger stone around to sit just below. Nothing extra pierces the ear, and the stud can be worn on its own by leaving the jacket in the box. The lower stone sits slightly forward of the stud so the two read as a stacked pair rather than one overlapping the other.

What Metal and Diamonds Are Used?

The studs, the jackets, and the baskets are solid 14K gold, shown here in white, yellow, and rose. The 64 stones are lab grown diamonds totalling 2 3/4 carats: four principal rounds, one stud and one jacket stone per ear, with the rest set into the two baskets. The basket stones are melee, so the pair is covered by a test certificate on the gold and the diamonds rather than by a report on every stone.

• ◆ The jacket is drilled to the same post gauge as the stud, so the two parts sit tight against the lobe instead of rattling on a loose fit
