How Do the Square Frames Work?

Each lab-created birthstone sits in a small square frame of 14K gold. The top edge of the frame is beaded, the four sides are fluted in fine vertical ribs, and the chain runs through a channel in the frame, so the frames slide freely and settle side by side at the lowest point of the chain.

Because the frames move, they can be worn touching, as a pair or a row, or spread apart along the chain. The back of each frame is open behind the stone, which lets light into it from both sides and keeps the frame light.

Which Months Use Lab-Created Stones, and Which Use Natural Ones?

We use lab-created stones as standard wherever a lab-created version of the birthstone exists, because it has the same color, hardness and chemistry as the mined stone at a lower cost: amethyst for February, emerald for May, alexandrite for June, ruby for July, sapphire for September and citrine for November, with a lab grown diamond for April. Garnet, aquamarine, peridot, pink tourmaline, blue topaz and tanzanite have no lab-created version, so those months use natural stones.
