The journey arrangement is usually read as past, present, and future, which is why it is given for anniversaries more often than it is bought on a Tuesday. Within our diamond necklaces range, this is the vertical one, built to draw the eye down the neckline rather than across it.

Design Details

Why Are the Baskets Open Underneath?

Seen from the front the three stones look like they are sitting on metal. Seen from the side, each one is held in a four wall basket cut away underneath, so light enters from below as well as from the front. A closed back on a stone this size darkens the pavilion and the diamond turns grey in low light. That is the whole reason for the extra work.

The three baskets are soldered directly to each other rather than hung from separate links, so the column stays rigid and does not fold on itself when the necklace comes off. Between each pair of stones sits one small shared prong, and the bail is a tapered loop joined to the top basket. At 3.5 mm wide the pendant is narrower than most three stone drops, which is what lets it sit inside a shirt placket instead of on top of one.

Materials & Craft

What Metal and Diamonds Are Used?

The baskets, the prongs, and the bail are solid 14K gold, shown here in white, yellow, and rose. The three stones are lab grown diamonds, round brilliant cut, 5/8 carat in total, which puts each one near 3.7 mm across. Stones of that size are set as accent stones rather than graded individually, so the pendant is covered by a test certificate on the gold and the diamonds rather than by a report on each stone.

  • ◆ The three stones are matched for size, colour, and cut before setting, because a vertical column shows a mismatch faster than a scattered layout does
  • ◆ Each basket is cut open on all four sides and underneath, so the pavilion of every stone stays lit rather than sitting against solid metal
  • ◆ The baskets are joined to each other in one line before any stone goes in, so the column is set as a single rigid piece rather than three parts strung together
  • ◆ The bail is tapered to a narrow throat so the pendant cannot slide sideways along the chain or tip out of plane

What Can Be Specified Before Production?

This pendant is built to order. The configuration shown is a starting point, not a fixed SKU. The following options can be specified before production starts.

  • ◆ Chain length: 18 inch as shown, with 16 inch and 20 inch cut to the same gauge
  • ◆ Carat weight: 5/8 ct across three stones as shown, with lighter and heavier stones set into baskets scaled to match
  • ◆ Stone layout: three equal stones as shown, or graduated with the largest at the bottom
  • ◆ Gold karat: 14K as shown, or 18K
  • ◆ Gold color: white as shown, with yellow and rose both shown here
  • ◆ White gold finish: rhodium plated over solid white gold; the plating wears gradually with friction, fastest on rings, and can be re-plated
  • ◆ Chain style: cable as shown, with rope or box on request
  • ◆ Engraving: initials or a date cut into the back of the top basket, in the font you choose, included at no charge
  • ◆ Stone type: lab grown diamond as standard, with natural diamond available on request
  • ◆ Diamond grade: F color and VS clarity at minimum, with Excellent cut on the round stones, as our lab grown standard; D color and VVS clarity available on request
