Why Are Kite Shaped Chamfers Cut Into the Bezel Wall?

A plain bezel wraps the girdle in an unbroken band of metal, which protects the stone but also shades it. Four kite shaped notches are cut through the wall at the compass points of this bezel, so the rim reads as four curved arcs instead of one solid ring. Each opening lets light enter the diamond from the side and returns a flash of the pavilion that a closed bezel would hide, while the remaining metal still covers the girdle all the way around.

The proportions follow from that. The bezel measures 4.2 mm width by height in the configuration shown, and the chamfered points are cut narrow so the wall keeps its structural thickness between them. The chain attaches at the sides of the bezel rather than to a bail, which holds the stone flat and face forward at the center of the neckline. On a 1.15 mm cable chain finished at 18 inches, the piece lands just below the collarbone and sits close enough to the skin to layer with a longer chain.
