Why Does a Curb Link Lie Flat?

A curb link begins as a round oval loop. Each loop is then compressed and given a quarter twist, which brings two faces of every link into the same plane as the chain. That twist is the whole reason a curb chain lies flat on the skin and does not roll or bunch the way an untwisted cable chain does. The flattened faces are polished, so the top of the chain reads as one continuous bright line rather than a row of separate loops.

At 4 mm the chain has enough presence to be worn on its own, while 12 grams over 42 cm keeps it light enough for all day wear. Every link is closed and soldered individually, so there is no open joint anywhere along the run. Both ends terminate in a tapered solid cap, and the lobster clasp is attached to that cap rather than to a link, which is what keeps the load off the last loop when the clasp is opened and closed.

The chain is solid 18K gold, 750 parts per thousand, alloyed for the warm yellow tone shown and drawn to wire on site before the links are formed.
