A lariat is a necklace with a vertical drop, and most of them carry one pendant at the end of it. This one keeps stones running the whole way, so the drop reads as part of the necklace rather than something hung from it. Among our diamond necklaces, it is the piece that uses three diamond shapes in one line.

Design Details

Why Use Three Diamond Shapes on One Chain?

Around the neck, round and princess cut stations alternate. A round throws light in every direction and a princess cut shows a flat square table, so alternating them gives the upper chain a rhythm without either shape taking over. At the point where the chain divides, a princess cut marks the junction, and it is the one stone that takes the weight of the drop, so its setting is the sturdiest on the necklace.

Below the junction the stones change to pear shapes, each set point down. The pears lead the eye downward and make the drop look longer than it is, and the last pear finishes the tail. Stations are evenly spaced along both parts of the chain for a clean line, and the 2 inch extension lets the junction sit at the collarbone or a little lower depending on the neckline.

Materials & Craft

What Metal and Diamonds Are Used?

The chain, the settings, the clasp, and the extension are solid 14K yellow gold. The 40 stones are lab grown diamonds in round, princess and pear shapes, 6 9/10 carats together. They are station stones spread along the chain rather than one graded center stone, so the necklace is covered by a test certificate on the gold and the diamonds.

  • ◆ Each station has its own prong setting cut to the shape of its stone: four prongs on the rounds, corner prongs on the princess cuts that protect all four points, and a V prong on the tip of every pear
  • ◆ The junction setting is built with a stronger base and a soldered ring for the drop, because it carries the pull of the whole tail
  • ◆ Stations are fixed to the chain at measured intervals, so the spacing on the left and right sides of the neck matches link for link
  • ◆ The finished necklace is hung and checked so the drop falls straight from the junction, and the clasp and extension are tested for closing security

What Can Be Specified Before Production?

This lariat is built to order. The configuration shown is a starting point, not a fixed SKU. The following options can be specified before production starts.

  • ◆ Chain length: 20 inches plus a 2 inch extension as shown, or shorter or longer to suit the neckline
  • ◆ Drop length: as shown, or a shorter or longer tail with fewer or more pear stations
  • ◆ Carat weight: 6 9/10 ct as shown, or smaller stations for a lighter necklace
  • ◆ Gold karat: 14K as shown, or 18K
  • ◆ Gold color: yellow as shown, with white also shown here and rose on request
  • ◆ White gold finish: rhodium plated over solid white gold; the plating wears gradually with friction, fastest on rings, and can be re-plated
  • ◆ Engraving: initials or a date on the tag at the end of the extension, in the font you choose, at no charge
  • ◆ Stone type: lab grown diamond as standard, with natural diamond available on request
  • ◆ Diamond grade: F color and VS clarity at minimum, with Excellent cut on the round stones, as our lab grown standard; D color and VVS clarity available on request
