It was first made as one of a matched pair for two brothers, each bangle carrying his own initial, and is now offered with any letter. Among our gold bracelets, it is the plain gold bangle built around lettering rather than stones.

Why Is This Bangle Made to Be Worn as a Pair?

The first pair set the pattern. One bangle carried an A, the other an R, and inside both we engraved the same joined AR monogram and a line that ended with the word love. The design suits a couple without changing a single part, and that is how we offer it now.

Seen from the outside, the bangle says one name. The A repeats in every roundel, so the letter shows every time the wrist turns. Look inside and it says two: both initials joined in one monogram, resting against the skin, seen only by the person wearing it and the person who gave it.

A couple can set the letters two ways. Each wears their own initial, so the A and the R sit side by side when you hold hands. Or the two of you swap, and the letter on your wrist all day belongs to the other person.

The bangle opens on a hinge, goes around the wrist instead of sliding over the hand, and closes with a screw lock, so it sits close and stays on from morning to night. Ordered together, the two bangles are made in the same run from the same 14K gold, so on two wrists they match in color and polish and read as one set.

The letter does not have to be a name. It can be the first letter of the city where you met, of a child’s name, or of a word only the two of you use. The inside line is engraved free, in the font you choose: a date, both names, a few words of your own. Given as a wedding gift or as anniversary jewelry, the pair carries the same date on both wrists. Between siblings, which is who the first pair was for, or between a parent and a child, it works the same way.

How Are the Letters Drawn and Engraved?

The client specified a font for every position: a classic serif capital for the outside roundels, a flowing script for the inside line, a monogram that joins the two brothers’ initials, and a separate serif for a short number. None of these existed as a font file we could cut at roundel size, so our designer redrew each letter from the client’s images, matching stroke weight and serif shape, and the drawing went back to the client for approval before any gold was cut.

Each roundel is a thin engraved ring with the capital centered inside it. The ring gives every letter a fixed frame, so the A keeps the same size and position all the way around the curved band. On the inside, the script runs along the length of the band, and its height is sized to the 4.8 mm width so the tails of the letters stay clear of both edges.

What Gold Is Used, and Why Is the Band 2.2 mm Thick?

The band, the hinge, and the screw lock are solid 14K yellow gold, with no hollow core. The client first asked for a light bangle, and the first CAD drawing used a 1.7 mm band. A cast band could have kept that weight, but not the hinge and screw lock the client wanted. Those had to be machined, and the machined construction is heavier. We set out both options before production, and the client kept the screw lock and accepted the added weight and labor. The band went to 2.0 mm and then to 2.2 mm for production. At 2.2 mm the finished A bangle weighs 23.16 g on our scale.

What Can Be Specified Before Production?

This bangle is built to order. The letter A shown is one client’s initial; the roundels can carry any letter, and the following can be specified before production starts.

• ◆ Inside engraving: a name, a date, a script line, or a monogram, in the font you send us, at no charge
• ◆ Wrist size: taken from your wrist measurement and cut as an oval so the band sits flat on the wrist
• ◆ Band thickness: 2.2 mm as shown, or 2.0 mm; a lighter 1.7 mm band is made with a screw lock on both sides in place of the hinge
• ◆ Gold karat: 14K as shown, or 18K
• ◆ Gold color: yellow as shown, or white or rose
• ◆ White gold finish: rhodium plated over solid white gold; the plating wears gradually with friction, fastest on rings, and can be re-plated
