The stones run across the upper half of the band and the underside is plain gold with open cutouts, which is the half that rests on a desk or a keyboard. Among our gold bracelets, this is the bangle that pairs a bezel set center row with pave edges, so it carries more stone than a single row band without the bulk of full pave.

Why Is the Center Row Set Differently From the Edges?

The middle row carries the larger stones, each in its own faceted bezel with small prong accents at the sides. A bezel wraps the girdle of the stone in a thin wall of gold, so the largest diamonds, which sit highest on the band and take most of the knocks, are the ones with a full metal collar around them. The outer wall of each bezel is faceted too, so the collar catches light instead of reading as a flat gold ring.

The two outer rows are smaller round stones set pave, each held by beads of gold raised over its edge. They frame the center row and soften the edge of the band, so the bangle reads as one field of light from straight on and as three distinct lines from the side. At 3.2 mm high it sits low enough to slide under a shirt cuff, and the hinge lets it open wide rather than being pushed over the hand.

What Metal and Diamonds Are Used?

The band, the bezels, and the hinge are solid 14K white gold with a rhodium finish. The 137 stones are round lab grown diamonds, 3 1/2 carats in total. Every stone is a pave or accent size rather than a graded center stone, so the bangle is covered by a test certificate on the gold and the diamonds rather than by a report on each stone.

• ◆ The pave stones in the two outer rows are matched in size along their full length, so both edges of the band stay the same width from end to end

• ◆ The hinge and clasp are tested for opening tension and closing security after every stone is set, and the band is checked for roundness so it does not rock on the wrist
