Short answer: A pavé setting holds many small diamonds in seats drilled into the metal, each one secured by tiny beads raised from the surrounding surface, so the piece reads as continuous light instead of separate stones. It buys brilliance for a fraction of what one large diamond costs, and its weak point is never the stones. It is the beads.

What is a pavé setting?
Pavé, often written simply as pave, takes its name from the French word for paved, and that is precisely what the technique does. It paves a metal surface with small diamonds set so close together that the metal between them almost disappears. GIA describes pavé as a type of bead setting, where each stone sits in a recessed hole in the mounting and is held by small beads of metal attached at the stone’s girdle, usually in a honeycomb pattern.
The stones themselves are melee, the trade term for small diamonds of roughly 0.20 carat and under. On a typical paved band the individual stones measure about 0.9mm to 1.7mm across. Because small diamonds cost far less per carat than large ones, pavé is the most efficient way to add measurable carat weight and light return to a design without moving the price into solitaire territory.
The effect is optical, not only decorative. A paved band widens the field of brilliance around a center stone, which is why the same solitaire looks larger on a pavé shank than on a plain one.
What actually happens at the bench
The sequence explains almost every question buyers ask later. A setter marks each stone position, drills a tapered seat, and drops the stone just below the metal surface. Using a graver, the setter then raises two to four small beads from the metal immediately beside the stone and rolls them over the girdle with a beading tool. A bright cut along the edge of the row throws light back into the stones.
The detail that matters: the metal holding your diamond is the same metal that was displaced from beside it. Nothing is added. That is why wall thickness under the stones, alloy hardness, and the accuracy of the CAD layout decide long-term security far more than the grade of the melee does. What are the main types of pavé settings?
Every variation below uses the same bead principle. What changes is how much metal is cut away around each stone, which controls how much light gets in from the side and how much support is left behind.

Micro pavé is the version most often upsold, and it is genuinely more work: smaller stones, more of them, and beads formed under magnification. It is worth the premium on a piece worn occasionally or on a protected surface such as a halo. On the underside of a ring worn daily, classic or U-cut pavé holds up better for the same money.
Which metal holds pavé beads best?
This is the question our production team is asked most often, usually phrased as white gold versus yellow gold. The honest answer is that color is a preference and alloy hardness is an engineering decision, and they are separate choices.
14k alloys are harder than 18k, and harder metal keeps a fine bead sharp for longer. 18k carries more gold, 750 parts per thousand against 585, and reads warmer and richer in yellow. For a wide band with generous metal around each stone, 18k is entirely safe. For a very thin thread pavé worn every day, the extra hardness of 14k is a real advantage rather than a cost saving.
White gold adds one maintenance item that has nothing to do with security. White gold is rhodium plated, and the plating wears at contact points, most visibly on the underside of a ring. Replating every twelve to twenty four months restores the color. The alloy beneath the plating is what actually grips the stone, so a worn plate is cosmetic, not structural. Yellow and rose gold need no plating, so the finish you receive is the finish you keep. The trade off is contrast: warm metal beside colorless melee makes the metal outline of each seat easier to see, which some buyers prefer and others do not. Platinum is the most ductile of the three. Its beads move rather than crack under impact, and the metal wears down over decades instead of wearing away. It is also denser and more expensive, so the same design costs more in platinum than in gold.
Is a pavé setting durable enough for everyday wear?
Yes, when the layout is right. GIA calls pavé set diamonds typically very secure because they are set into the metal itself, with one specific caution: avoid pavé on the bottom of the shank, where friction is constant and stones are more easily lost or damaged. GIA also notes that a lost pavé stone is harder for a bench jeweler to replace than a lost prong-set one, which is the practical reason to prevent the problem rather than plan on fixing it.
In practice, pavé rarely fails at the stone. It fails at the bead. A diamond does not wear out; the small piece of gold folded over its girdle does. Four situations account for nearly every lost stone we are asked to repair:
- Gradual bead wear. Years of contact round off the bead until it no longer overlaps the girdle. This is slow and predictable, and a yearly inspection catches it.
- A single sharp knock. A strike on a doorframe or gym equipment can lift one bead. The stone often stays in place for weeks afterward, which is why the loss seems to come from nowhere.
- Resizing. Heat and pressure applied near a paved section can loosen beads that were sound before the work started.
- Ultrasonic cleaning on an already loose stone. The machine does not create the problem, it finishes it.
Three warning signs are worth knowing: the ring starts catching on knitwear, one stone sits visibly lower than its neighbors, or you hear a faint rattle when you tap the band near your ear. Any of those means re-tipping is due, and re-tipping a bead is a small job compared with replacing a stone and matching it to the rest of the row.

Most rings use more than one. A common and sensible combination is a prong or bezel center stone for maximum light and security, with pavé on the shoulders for width and brilliance. Can a pavé ring be resized?
It depends entirely on what sits on the underside of the band.
A half pavé design, with stones across the top and plain metal below, can usually be resized by one to two sizes in either direction, because the jeweler works only in the plain section. A three quarter design has less room but is often still workable. A full pavé or full eternity band cannot be meaningfully resized, because there is no plain metal to cut and no way to add or remove length without removing stones and rebuilding the row.
That is the single most consequential specification on a paved ring, and it should be settled before production rather than after delivery. If the design is full coverage, take the time to measure your ring size at home properly, or have it measured twice on different days, since finger size shifts with temperature and time of day. Full, half, or three quarter pavé: how much coverage do you need?
Coverage is a wearability decision disguised as an aesthetic one.
- Full eternity. Stones all the way around, the most carat weight, and sparkle from every angle including when the ring rotates. No resizing, and the underside stones take daily friction. Our full pavé eternity ring in 18k white gold is the reference version of this.
- Three quarter. Stones across everything visible on the hand, plain metal only at the very bottom. Nearly all of the look, with a small margin for future sizing.
- Half. Stones across the top only. The most practical option for a ring worn every day and worked in, and the easiest to service over decades.
The same logic carries to pieces that are not rings, where sizing is not a constraint at all. A pavé hinged cuff bracelet or a pair of pavé huggie hoop earrings can carry full coverage without any of the resizing trade offs, which is why full pavé often makes more sense on a bracelet than on a ring.
How do you clean a pavé setting at home?
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush used with almost no pressure. Brush from the underside as well as the top, because product residue collects beneath the seats where you cannot see it, and a dull pavé row is nearly always dirt rather than damage. Rinse in a bowl rather than over a drain, then dry the piece completely, since water trapped under melee is what leaves a grey film as it evaporates.

What to confirm before ordering a custom pavé piece
Renders look identical across suppliers. Specifications do not. These are the numbers worth having in writing before anyone casts metal:
- Stone count and size range, for example 46 stones at 1.2mm to 1.3mm, not simply “pavé set”.
- Total carat weight of the melee, stated separately from any center stone.
- Setting style, classic, micro, French, or U-cut, since the same carat weight looks different in each.
- Metal and karat, plus the finished gram weight. Weight is the specification most often quietly reduced.
- Band width and wall thickness beneath the stones, which is what actually determines bead security.
- Coverage, half, three quarter, or full, and whether the underside is plain.
- Finish detail, bright cut edge or milgrain, which changes the character of the row considerably.
- The grading report number for any certified center stone, before dispatch rather than inside the parcel.

Frequently asked questions
Do pavé diamonds fall out often?
Not when the piece is set correctly and checked periodically. Loss is concentrated in two places: the underside of a ring shank, where friction is constant, and any bead that has already been lifted by an impact. A yearly inspection and re-tipping when needed prevents nearly all of it.
Is micro pavé worth the extra cost?
On protected surfaces such as a halo, a pendant, or earrings, yes, because the finer stones read as a continuous surface and nothing is rubbing against them. On the shank of a ring worn every day, classic or U-cut pavé gives you more metal around each stone for the same budget and will need less service.
Can pavé be added to a ring I already own?
Sometimes, but it requires enough metal thickness to drill seats and raise beads without weakening the band. A thin worn shank usually cannot take it. The realistic answer often is to rebuild the shank rather than to cut into the existing one, and that is a decision for whoever will inspect the piece physically.
Does pavé really make a center stone look bigger?
It makes the setting look bigger, which is what the eye reads. A paved shank or a halo of melee extends the bright area outward with no break, so the center stone appears to continue into it. The effect is strongest with a halo and weakest with a wide gap between the melee and the center stone.
How many diamonds are in a typical pavé band?
A half pavé band in a common size usually carries 20 to 30 stones, a three quarter design 35 to 50, and a full eternity band 40 to 60, depending on stone diameter and finger size. Ask for the count and the size range together, since a high count of very small stones and a low count of larger ones can carry the same total carat weight and look nothing alike.
Will a pavé band scratch my other rings?
Diamond is harder than any jewelry metal, so a paved band worn tightly against a plain one will mark the plain band over time. Stacking with a small gap, or placing the paved band on the outside of the stack, avoids most of it.
