How Is the Face Modeled, and Why Is the Crown White?

The head turns to the right in three quarter profile, eyes lifted, with the brow, the nose and the cheek modeled in full relief. The skin carries a fine satin finish, while the hair and the beard are cut in long bright facets that run with the strands, so they flash against the matte face as the pendant moves.

The crown of thorns wraps the head as a raised band of twisted branches, with thorn points that stand out past the outline on both sides. It is the only part plated white, and its bright cut facets break the white into small sparks, so the crown reads first from a distance and the face reads next.

What Gold Is It Made In, and Why Is the Back Open?

The pendant is solid 10K yellow gold, 41.7% pure gold, and the crown of thorns is rhodium plated white as a finish. The back is hollowed out behind an open honeycomb lattice of gold, which keeps a deep relief light enough to wear: the 57 mm size weighs 8.81 g and the 32 mm size 1.43 g. A closed back can be made instead, which adds gold weight.
