The design puts almost all of its visual weight in one place. A cross paved evenly from end to end reads as a band of sparkle, while this one reads as a point of light with two quiet lines leading into it, which is why it still works over an open collar rather than only with evening dress. Within our diamond necklaces collection, this is the cross built around a single faceted center rather than around uniform coverage.

Design Details

What Does Kite Setting the Princess Center Actually Change?

A princess cut is square. Set square, it would sit as a small block at the intersection and cut both lines of round stones in half. Rotated 45 degrees, its four corners point straight down the four arms, so the center stone finishes each line instead of interrupting it and the intersection reads as a four point star rather than a square. That rotation is the whole design decision on this piece.

The 1/3 ct total is distributed so the center carries visible weight while the 17 round accents stay small, which keeps the arms narrow enough to hold a single row of stones. Every stone is held by prongs rather than set into a channel, so gold shows only as thin beads between the diamonds. The 1.15 mm cable chain is deliberately fine so it carries the pendant without competing with it, and at 18 inches the cross sits at or just below the collarbone on most wearers.

Materials & Craft

What Metal and Diamonds Does This Pendant Use?

The cross, bail, and chain are produced in solid 18K gold (Au750), not plated and not filled, and white gold is rhodium plated at our manufacturing facility for the bright neutral finish shown. All 18 stones are lab grown diamonds, chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds, supplied with a diamond test certificate. A princess returns light in fewer, broader flashes than a small round does, so the center and the accents are matched as one set for color and clarity before any stone is seated. On a design that concentrates attention at one point, a mismatch at the center is the first thing the eye catches.

  • The princess seat is cut on the diagonal so all four corners of the stone align with the four arms of the cross, not with the outline of the seat
  • The corners of a princess cut are its most fragile points, so each corner prong is formed to cover the corner rather than sit beside it
  • The 17 round seats are cut individually so the accents sit level along arms narrow enough to hold only one row
  • Prong height, stone level, and bail alignment are checked under magnification before the chain is attached
