Why Is the Sapphire Set Into the Clasp?

The clasp is the ornament, and it is worn at the front rather than hidden at the nape. That decision is what lets a two row choker stay flat: instead of a pendant pulling the strands down at the center, the sapphire cluster sits between them and holds both rows apart at a fixed spacing. Each strand ends at its own small connector bar on either side of the clasp, so the two rows never cross or ride over each other.

The sapphire is held in a rub over bezel, with two concentric rows of pavé diamonds ringing it. The closure is a box clasp: a flat tongue slides into the body of the clasp and locks, and the whole back plate is solid 18K white gold stamped Au750. Because the clasp is the visible centerpiece, its back is finished to the same standard as its face.
